Natural Alternative for Head Lice Infections, Fleas treatment and Ticks:

What do Head Lice, Fleas, Ticks and Pubic Lice have in common?

They are parasite living of a host organism (usually a human or animal), which means they feed of and need the host to survive. Therefore they are very quick to adapt to new environments and like viruses or bacteria have the ability to become resistant to chemical treatments and evolved. The other thing they all have in common is that they all have an exoskeleton (a hard outside shell), which remain the best way of destroying them.

What is the danger of an infection?

Contrary to popular beliefs, these parasites infections are nothing to do with personal hygiene, as they do not discriminate on the host, gender or age. But most importantly as they travel very easily from host to host they can carry many diseases or protozoan, worms and transmit them to the host organism. Not only they actually feed of the blood of the host organism, they can create many allergic reactions and diseases, which in some cases can be deadly or require immediate medical attention. Please note this is not mentioned in order to install fear, but merely statements from personal experiences from poisoning of animals to massive swelling from tick's bites or behaviour changes to children that have been witnessed.

Head Lice & Pubic Lice - Crabs - for Kids & Adults

As we are no longer treating these infections with DDT (banned in the last century, due to its possible cancer causing effects), some of the current treatments require either dangerous pesticides or chemicals, of which the parasite is able to adjust and become resistant to.
There are known alternative ways to get ride of these parasites, usually using essential oils, such as tea tree oil, lavender, rosemary, neem and many more.
One of the most efficient is surely the Tea Tree oil, but it actually can not be ingested due to the lethal effect it has on the central nervous system and act as a poison, therefore never use Tea Tree oil in its pure active form on an animal, as it will instinctively lick it off and ingest it. You might simply poison and kill your pet by pure ignorance, rather than getting rid of the fleas.

Monoi de Tahiti, which is a coconut oil based product, works well as a head lice treatment, since coconut oil is deadly to lice. If you have a severe outbreak apply the oil on your child's hair. You might also add some oil to the laundry as a preventative. Monoi de Tahiti added to a shampoo will also kill the lice and any new nymphs as they hatch and will work wonder as a natural hair repairer and conditioner.

If your kids continue to wash their hair with Monoi de Tahiti added to their shampoo or uses it as a hair conditioner, it will make their hair shiny, manageable and assist in the prevention of these parasites.

A 2009 clinical trial has shown the superiority of a coconut oil as a natural alternative to the conventional treatment from head lice and their eggs. The clinical trial, which was published in the European Journal of Paediatrics involved 100 participants, found that coconut oil based product was more effective than pharmaceutical permethrin (an insecticide for treating lice infestation) 0.43 per cent topical treatment for head lice. It was 40% more effective than the neurotoxin permethrin.

Overall, these studies indicated that the product is likely to have a treatment success rate of around 90 per cent, which would make it an acceptable alternative in areas where resistance is an issue with conventional insecticides like permethrin.

The researchers, declaring that the fatty content of the coconut oil, which persisted on the hair and lice subsequent to washing contributed to the efficacy of the coconut oil based product.

On a funny note: we have found an amazing explanation on internet mentioning that the use of oils to the hair will make it slippery and therefore the fleas will not longer be able to hold onto the hair, if only it was that easy!

Fleas, Ticks & Midges (Queensland itch) for Animals

The most abundant natural source of medium chain fatty acids (MCFA) is coconut oil. Studies have shown that like bacteria, viruses and fungi, parasites can not stand up against MCFAs.

Thus, its effectiveness in suffocating the fleas is probably the most reliable natural tool to fight against them. There are many sources mentioning that it can actually kill the eggs too. As well, the application of Monoi de Tahiti will benefit the wounds healing caused by the bites.

Horse owners have experienced great results in relieving the itch and healing of the wounds caused by midge's bites.

We experienced amazing results upon a massive flea infection on our cats and extreme skin sensitivity reaction of their skin creating nasty wounds.

The most relevant explanation we have found is that these fleas, ticks and head lice are parasites which have an exoskeleton; once the oil is being rub on it, it suffocate the parasite and them becomes deadly to them. This remains the safest and most convenient way of dealing promptly with these parasites.

Wounds Healing

Wounds from fleas infections:

Research is now verifying many health benefits of coconut oil, which many indigenous communities have long known. In a recent study published in Skin Pharmacology and Physiology, scientists examined the impact of topical coconut oil on wound healing and found that when virgin coconut oil was applied to the wound, it dramatically increased the rate at which wounds heal.

Researchers found that the coconut oil dramatically increased the rate at which the wounds heal by stimulating collagen production and turn-over. Also, new blood vessels formed more quickly in skin treated with virgin coconut oil.

A study, which was undertaken to evaluate the effect of a topical application of virgin coconut oil on wound healing in young rats, involved three sets of experiments with three groups of female Sprague-Dawley rats each consisting of six animals. Group 1 was the control; groups 2 and 3 were treated with 0.5 and 1.0 ml VCO, respectively, 24 hours after wound creation for 10 days. After the experimental period, the healing property of virgin coconut oil was evaluated on the healing process.

Dermatitis:

According to a 2008 study published in the journal Dermatitis, virgin coconut oil has emollient properties that help to heal and protect the skin's surface, as well as broad-spectrum antimicrobial components that help to protect against bacteria, viruses and fungi associated with eczema.

Known Topical Application Benefits

Monoi de Tahiti has now been accepted and recognized for its following properties:

Skin Care Moisturiser

Hair Repairer and Conditioner

Sun and After-sun care

Massage oil

Natural Insect Repellent

Other Topical Application Benefits

Eczema is a condition in which the skin becomes dry, cracked and flaky and is far more susceptible to getting infected. There is no known cure for eczema, but Virgin coconut oil can be considered as a natural alternative to relieve its associated itching and redness of the skin.

According to a 2008 study published in the journal Dermatitis, virgin coconut oil has emollient properties that help to heal and protect the skin's surface, as well as broad-spectrum antimicrobial components that help to protect against bacteria, viruses and fungi associated with eczema.

Burns, especially scalds from hot water and liquids are some of the most common childhood accidents. An assessment of virgin coconut oil on burns found out that it could be used as a cheap and effective adjuvant to other topical agents used in the treatment of burns.

Scientists published in the 2008 edition of the Indian Journal of Pharmacology that there was significant improvement in burn wound contraction in the group treated with the combination of coconut and silver sulphadiazine.

They suggested that its effectiveness in treatment of burns could be due to both its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties.

Arthritis is painful and frustrating. Many prescription and over-the-counter medications promise relief from the aching joint pain. Not all forms of treatment come from the pharmacy, though. In fact, one of such is coconut oil.

Studies have shown that coconut oil helps to smooth the pain of fibromyalgia and arthritis. That people suffering from arthritis will experience less pain in their joints and fingers after rubbing the affect areas with coconut oil was corroborated in a 2010 study published the journal, Pharmaceutical biology.

Under laboratory conditions, the oil was tried out on the swollen paw and ear of rats and found to have anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic properties. It was suggested that massaging coconut oil into the aching joint help to reduce inflammation, increase blood flow to the afflicted area and invariably decreasing arthritic pain.

Because of its smoothing medical effects, coconut oil is used on herpes symptoms, on minor cuts and bruises. The lauric acid that it contains is also an anti-microbial that kills certain bacteria, virus and fungi (Athlete's Foot) that are not treated with conventional medicine.

Direction of use

For Human - Head Lice, Ticks, Pubic Lice:

As preventative:

Wash the hair by applying a few drops of Monoi de Tahiti with the shampoo, or every 2 weeks lather the hair and scalp with Monoi de Tahiti and leave for 30 minutes, then wash and rise thoroughly.

For severe infections:
